Returning from a volunteering stint recently I found my home in a state of chaos. To quote my Grandmother-in-law a right 'Casey's Court'. Better half was trying to move the TV to a new position in the sitting room. This involved moving the aerial cable and drilling two holes through the wall into the kitchen. Cupboards were pulled out, contents everywhere ; a right mess. He had hoped to get it finished and tidy before my return but hadn't reckoned on how solid the walls were, and how ineffectual his drill. Long story short the saga continues and next step is to hire a bigger drill. In the meanwhile cupboard contents are still strewn everywhere...harrumph. Personally the tv looked fine where it was....but that's another matter. To add to this chaos we have been waiting for half a lorry load of logs for some weeks. The delivery man was on holiday, but they promised faithfully to phone before arrival. Logs are a bit of a pain. We have them dumped in the parish yard and then slide them on a tarpaulin across the grass to our garden gate and wood store. Getting through the gate is fun and involves tipping the tarpaulin carefully without dropping the logs. Needless to say they didn't ring, just turned up when we were due out shortly. The logs couldn't be left so we were back and forwards like two pit ponies at top speed, shuttling the logs to their new home. Job successfully achieved and now we will be cosy for some weeks. Just as well, judging by the latest tabloid news headlines "WORST WINTER IN THIRTY YEARS'. I do love perusing them on the supermarket shelves to get my laugh of the day. Clearly some poor hack was tasked with an empty front page and used the old chestnut of shock weather headlines to sell news! In other news ( not shocking) we have been dodging showers on our daily walks. Not so lucky one day, when we had a good dousing. That was the morning when I had a golden moment watching fledgling gulls stepping off the seawall to be shot upwards on a thermal. An amazing sight. Pampas grasses are at their finest at the moment, looking superb as their fluffiness is wafted in the force eight breeze. In the garden raindrops in the sunshine highlight the many spiders webs, like little diamonds.
So have any of you heard the expression 'Casey's Court' , I gather it goes back to the days of Charlie Chaplin. Any odd or old expressions in your households that you would care to share? Barbara xxx
