Minari Director Lee Isaac Chung to Direct Live-Action Your Name Adaptation for Hollywood

Your Name

Hot off the heels of winning audiences and critics over at Sundance with his latest film Minari, The Hollywood Reporter revealed today that Lee Isaac Chung's next film will be the Hollywood adaptation of Makoto Shinkai's massive anime hit Your Name, replacing the previously reported director Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man, 500 Days of Summer). The Korean-American will be rewriting the script based on a draft by Emily V. Gordon (The Big Sick).

Previous drafts of the scripts were written by Eric Heisserer (Arrival), who said in an interview with Slashfilm that "[the Japanese producers] stated if they wanted a Japanese live-action version, they would just do it themselves. But they want to see it through the lens of a western viewpoint." It was previously reported that the Hollywood adaptation of Your Name would reimagine the story with a Native American girl living in a rural area and a boy from Chicago. Chung is not working off Heisserer's draft, only Gordon's.

Producing the American adaptation of the popular Japanese film is J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber at Bad Robot Productions, with the original anime film producer Genki Kawamura, producing at Toho, who are also disturbing the live-action film in Japan. Your Name will be distributed by Paramount in North America.

It hasn't been announced when the live-action Your Name film will release, or when production will begin on the movie.
